Justin -- I'm a slacker |
I should be running, but it's cold and windy and I don't feel like freezing my tail off (please don't point out my last post on running in the winter..lol)
I went through all the trouble of dragging the treadmill out into our living room so I could watch Heroes while running, just to find out that the treadmill has a short. At least I think it's a short, it will start out just fine, then just stop randomly. If anybody was wondering what I would like for Christmas, you can just get me a new treadmill! |
Justin -- Running in winter |
With the weather getting colder, it's important to dress appropriately for your runs. When dressing for the cold, think in layers.
Runners World has the following temp guide for winter dress:
30 degrees: 2 tops, 1 bottom. Long-sleeve base layer and a vest keep your core warm. Tights (or shorts, for polar bears).
10 to 20 degrees: 2 tops, 2 bottoms. A jacket over your base layer, and wind pants over the tights.
0 to 10 degrees: 3 tops, 2 bottoms. Two tops (fleece for the cold-prone) and a jacket. Windbrief for the fellas.
Minus 10 to 0 degrees: 3 tops, 2 bottoms, extra pair of mittens, 1 scarf wrapped around mouth or a balaclava.
I will normally wear 2 or 3 layers of clothing, depending on just how cold or windy it is.
The first layer wicks away moisture - I like tights, the compression helps support muscles and they feel warmer...maybe that's just me. I use Nike Stay warm thermals (long sleeve top and pants) and they are awesome! Make sure that whatever you use doesn't soak up moisture. I think my thermals are something like 90 percent polyester, 10 percent spandex.
The second layer is for insulation, something like fleece or a heavy cotton, I usually wear a warm long sleeve shirt, or if it's really cold then I bust out my warm hoodie.
The third layer is to protect you from the wind, rain, snow, windbreakers are nice, anything waterproof really. This layer can be optional if it's not windy or snowing or whatever.
Don't let the cold weather take away your motivation, get out there and start running, and you'll feel warm soon enough! |
Justin -- 6.2 miles logged |
6.2 miles in 1 hours, 3 minutes, and 0 seconds at a pace of 10 minutes and 10 seconds per mile
I ran the YMCA Turkey Run 10k with Chris B. This was my first 10k race, so anytime I put up would be a PR for me. I have been logging 5k's around 28 to 29 minutes, so I set a time goal for 1 hour and 6 minutes, which would equal out to 11 minute miles. There were about 1000 people at the race, the most of them were in the 5k walk/run. Chris and I were two of like 30 runners who were signed up for the 10k. I felt really good during the race, and found that it was a lot of fun to run with a friend. We posted a time of 1 hour 3 minutes (not sure what the official time is yet) and I'm very happy with it. I'll post more thoughts on this race once official race results and pictures come in. |
Justin -- The running Blog |
The Running Blog is basically up and running now. After messing around with another CMS (Joomla) I've decided to stick with PHP Fusion, cause it's the language I speak best =) So if you had signed up as a member to this site before today, you will have to register again, sorry for the inconvenience
I first got the idea of this blog when a friend of mine told me that he wanted to run with me at my next marathon. On this site, members can log in their miles, keep track of other members mileage, and give and receive support from others, so go ahead and sign up and start logging in those miles! |
Justin -- Marine Corps Marathon 2008 |

It's Thursday morning and I have a lot to do before leaving for the marathon later tonight. First things first is to pack my raceday bag.
Running shorts/running shirt...check
Running shoes/socks...check
Energy gels (GU Triberry)...check
Ibuprofen...check
Body Glide (to protect those sensitive areas from chaffing)...check
Band-aids (to protect the nips)...check
Running watch/charger...check
Getting all this packed is the most important thing, anything else I can live with forgetting. I get the rest of my stuff packed and ready to go and then I head off to work. Later on, around 6, we head out. It's raining and miserable weather for driving. We get to Danville and get a hotel for the night. Early on Friday morning we are back on the road heading to Winchester, VA where we will stay the night at Brandon's house. On the way we stop at a candle store that I found to be incredibly boring, but Mandy and Kim seemed to have a grand old time there, smelling like a thousand different candles. It was here that I decided to make a brand called "Mancandles", they'd smell like things that guys like, like sports, leather, and sex.
We get to Winchester around 7 and head out to eat with Brandon and Devon at an Italian restaurant, gotta load up on those carbs! I'm getting nervous, we're close to DC and the marathon is a few days away! In the morning we go out to eat with Brandon at Waffle House, this is my first experience at this fine eating establishment (go ahead and mark that off of my list)
